Related imageOut with the old, in with the new. After “securing a bag” with Champion’s active brand C9, Target aims to establish a retail “brand culture” by year 2020. Target said discontinuing the C9 line in 2020 was part of a “multi-year, broad strategy” to overhaul the exclusive brands it sells in stores. Target has introduced more than a dozen brands over the past year and plans to announce adding a new lineup of performance brands soon.

With Target’s foreseeable success in 2020 the company embarks on doing things different.

With great leaps, success has its failures. Or is it completely? The question isn’t narrow enough to end or begin with questioning whether Target’s decision to not double down on Champion’s “Retro Run” was wrong. Try explaining that to Doug Thomas at Gamco Investors who believe Target’s lost it aim. “I just feel like Target must be really out of touch with maybe their core consumers,” he said. “This is the time in my view— and I guess a lot of other people’s view— to redouble their commitment to Champion.”

Facts Vs Opinions.

Facts first, Champion is a brand on a comeback under the parenting of HanesBrand. Both Champion and Hanes have merchandise inside Target stores. Target being the hub for introducing new brands, trusted brands, and now a stronger push to promote self. Some give a nod to accredit Target for “seeing the play” the retail industry is calling.

It’s deeper than self-promotion. Target is securing long-term positioning in retail.

Target, the “big box store” who’s known for cultivating culture-like followings for other brands, is clearing shelf space for its foreseeable billion-dollar brands. Over the last 12 months Champion as a collective brand has generated $380 million proving its value inside Target stores. It’s nice for them to carry their weight but again, Target has competing brands on the verge of notching a billion dollars in revenue. This business decision clearly won’t affect the two company’s relationship as contracts won’t expire until 2020. That’s more than enough time for Champion and Target to execute new approaches.

The power of a brand lies in its influence to remain popular with and without profiting.

Recently opening brand name stores in Los Angeles, New York, and most recent Chicago. Champion’s crown won’t tilt as this strategy to cut out the middleman could allow them to continue their “retro run” even in 2020. As far as Target. Well no traditional way of doing business will work for any brick-and-mortar stores who sold goods to my grandmother. Your services will soon be no longer needed. Always appreciated, but not having a need for big box stores will deliver consequences. Ask Toys-R-Us.

Powering Terminology Used:

“Securing a bag” = For sure money (i.e. contracts)

“Seeing the play” = Understanding when others think you don’t

“Retro run” = Old becomes popular again

“Big box store” = A large retail establishment

“Brand Culture” = Aligning brand values with employee knowledge and consumer commitments

Characteristics of a Salable Business

15 Sep

Wise words from Mr. Cummings

David Cummings's avatarDavid Cummings on Startups

Many entrepreneurs paint a picture in their mind of a strategic acquirer swooping in one day and paying an outrageous amount of money for their business. In reality, most businesses are of little value until one of two things happen: a) they have multiple years of sustained profitability, or b) they are growing fast and have at least $5 million in revenue (see The Magic of $5 Million SaaS Run Rate). Unfortunately, most startups won’t be able to find a strategic buyer.

Here are characteristics of a salable business:

  • Large, established base of customers
  • Repeatable customer acquisition process
  • Proven management team
  • Little reliance on any one person
  • Consistent profitability and operating history (e.g. three years of results)
  • Strong recurring revenue (not required, but very desirable)
  • Market with logical, complementary acquirers

As you can see there’s no reference to cool technology, innovative products, or hot ideas. Those things help, but most acquisitions…

Literature’s Lounge: Vol 3 Never Settle Never Give In🚩✔

15 Sep

You can give this game your all & it’ll never be enough. That’s just signs to never settle. Re – evaluate, but never settle. Continue doing what’s helping you and cut ties with what’s hurting you. You have a whole lot of life to live and making the same mistakes will only increase your setbacks. I have a socological belief that when you knowingly act on mischief behavior your punishment is always worst because you were aware of your actions. It’s extremely challenging to always do the right thing. For one it seems to go unnoticed with so much negativity dominating good deeds. My advice to you is, find something that if you weren’t paid you would still do. That’s called passion.

Literture’s Lounge Vol. 2 Present

10 Aug

In life we’re all given a fair shot at our dreams. The only catch, it’s setup like a game of chess. You get so many chances to make forward progress until you reach a point of no return. This will determine if the decisions you’ve made will allow you to continue your path or force you to choose another one. Just like the game of chess, in life you’re given enough pieces to make some mistakes. With every mistake you’ll lose the option to make similar ones. The only difference with the game and our lives is, in the game we’re looking to outsmart our opponents. When you’re on pursuit to your dreams the only opponent is oneself and those you surround yourself around. “Checkmate”

Studio Life #LessWork

10 Mar

It all starts with a vision but in the end, it must be planned. Brainstorming your goals will end with failed attempts and mostly waisting vital people’s time. I like to keep things short & sweet. With that, I’ll leave you with this. Plan, plot, strategize, & chase progress. Nothing else.

Literature’s Lounge Vol. 1: Progress

30 Nov

There comes a time when you must stop talking about your goals and write them down. Today one minor goal of mine was accomplished and opened major doors. With that being said I’d like to give props to Mr. Get Your Buzz Up and his whole supporting staff. If you’re following my moves as an businessman, I now welcome you to “Literature’s Lounge.” Please stay a while, read my previous post, and when you make your exits you’re more than welcome to return. With no further ado, in the lounge today I’d like to give insight on attacking your goals hard and showcasing them like it’s easy (but we all know it takes lots of HARD WORK). Teachers always told us do your most challenging assignments first, that way you can breeze through your easier ones. I’m now a owner of a musical networking company so I speak for all independent artist when I say, attack your furthest goals early while completing the easier ones to help separate yourself along the way. I’ll let that one marinate, until next time enjoy your stay at the Literature’s Lounge.

WeSLiM™ Presents: Visionary Proposal

24 Jun
1weslim@gmail.com

Founder of WeSLiM: Bre’Yon Sommerville
“Our purpose is your independence.”

First things first I’d like to thank you all in advance for taking time to invest in what I reference as “free” knowledge. WeSLiM (We Support Local Independent Musicians) is a Madison, Wisconsin organic networking organization. We represent musicians, and all local art heavenly favored towards music seeing that music is the highest form of art.

Our services are artist based ranging from 1 on 1 consulting, marketing, branding of images, and of course networking. Our mission is to help local artist financially by linking them with potential investors/sponsors that relatively makes a connection to their particular sound/art. This is really the model of WeSLiM.

Not only is this a different approach locally but it also helps musicians/artist to actually look towards their local music/art as a brand building experience. The key to this method is done through strategic networking and a lot of paid lunches pitching this (in the average investor’s mind) one-sided vision.

With local businesses/entrepreneurs representing local artist this two-headed force will create rapid employment opportunities and generate revenue for the local communities. With this approach local artist can take pride in being local because let’s face it being local is stressing.

The only way this vision will successfully compete with the saturation of artistic outlets is if local artist play their role in launching this organization. As a local artist/musician myself I know how important it is to know and understand the music industry. So to my fellow locals we cannot compete with the majors without a clear understanding of our industries operating systems. This is where all local artist take their exits. See you on the other side of “I told you so’s.”

I can’t name one successful artist or business whose lacking the proper skills and knowledge of their field of choice. Show me certified doctors that never studied medicine and I’ll tell you the reasons I’ll never trust them. The biggest contribution local artist can offer in spite of participating in making WeSLiM a reality is, in my opinion the key to success,”NETWORKING.”

Networking opens up so many doors that music just doesn’t hold the weight to carry over. We must utilize our ability to communicate on a corporate level. Would you invest in a band or brand you couldn’t hold a conversation with about the business side of their career of choice? (I’ll wait…) exactly, as local artist it’s not an option to attend networking events and read really long books giving insight about the music industry. That my friend is the broad vision of WeSLiM. Now help us help you because our purpose is your independence. Again I’d like to thank you all in advance for reading my thoughts and being apart of my motivation. To all believers who’d like to see this unique movement become a force of organic nature contact 1weslim@gmail.com for ideas, donations, and sponsorships. All proceeds will go towards local events for local artist. Our vision is to expand the local arts with a global presence. My name is 1neofmani (One of Many) & I am the leader. #LessWork
